The 28-year-old British super-welterweight champion took to social media to verify he had spent the night during a cell having been arrested on suspicion of assault

British boxing champion Scott Fitzgerald spent an evening during a cell after being arrested on suspicion of assault.

The unbeaten super-welterweight has not fought since be beat Ted Cheeseman last October and checked into Tony Adams' Sport Chance clinic to treat alcohol and gambling problems earlier this month.

In a rambling message on his Instagram account, Fitzgerald admitted he had been arrested,

He said: "Ta f *** da to the police headquarters . Twenty four hours during a cell, that's some heavy s***."

In a further video message he added: "Yesterday i used to be arrested after a begin with my ex-partner and her family."

Fitzgerald goes on to mention that he broke up together with his girlfriend recently.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Constabulary said: "A 28-year-old man from Preston has been arrested on suspicion of assault following an event within the town. Enquiries are ongoing."

Fitzgerald stunned the previously unbeaten Anthony Fowler to win British title last year before following up with victory over Cheeseman.

He had been thanks to return to the ring on March 7 on the undercard of Scott Quigg's defeat by Jono Carroll in Manchester.

But he pulled out several weeks before admitting he wasn't fit.

Fitzgerald, who plans to rematch Fowler later this year, will likely now return on a Matchroom undercard when boxing resumes following the coronavirus crisis.
